DYSON SKI
Performance Goggles
2nd Year Studio - 4 Weeks - Team Project
An exercise in developing brand identity.
The brief: Design a pair of ski goggles for a recognizable brand that does not yet produce this type of product. The design must embody the brand’s identity while keeping into consideration the functional elements of ski goggles, as well as ergonomics, safety, and adjustability.
BRAND RESEARCH
At the core of Dyson are efficiency, innovation, performance, and sustainability. The majority of their team consists of engineers, with Sir James Dyson himself being an industrial designer and engineer. Although their products have an iconic aesthetic and make a statement in any home, their “brand” is not their main focus, but rather their ultimate goal is to relentlessly pursue the best technology and solve the problems others seem to ignore.
IDEATION
We looked at the design language and company values of Dyson, pulling out key elements we felt are essential. Their products consistently adopt simple forms that are curvilinear in nature, as well as chamfers and fillets. They use transparent elements to showcase the functionality inside their products - which are mainly dark grey with bold signature colours. Red accents are used to indicate a point of interaction. In essence, Dyson is an airflow company always looking to improve their technology, so our question was…
“How can we apply these elements while improving the performance of ski goggles?”
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
FINAL PRODUCT
Modelling
We began by layering clay onto the mannequin, smoothing and cutting the overall form using templates, and digging out the lens area.
Then we created the chamfered frame, applied a rim of thin strips to suggest foam, and used another template to score the lense tabs.
Lastly, we used a template to carve out the top vents and cored the chamfered bottom vents, created the cylinders, and inserted the strap.
Features
Adjustable Straps
Adjustable and interchangeable straps with coloured silicone grip, featuring a simple twist-and-lock attachment to the goggles.
Quality Airflow
Top vents are made with Gore-Tex for waterproofing and breathability. Cyclone-shaped bottom venting accelerates airflow through goggles which improves the anti-fog quality.
Interchangeable Lens
Spherical lenses for better anti-fog and anti-glare properties. Efficiently interchange lenses for different weather conditions via magnetic tabs.
