EXHIBITION
Women in Canadian Sports
4th Year BID - 10 Weeks
Group project to explore the world of Exhibition Design.
Over one semester, I and five other teammates set out to conceptualize a full exhibit that celebrates the past and present achievements and trials of Canadian women athletes. We each took on specific roles and set out to design the exhibit with the added challenge of remote collaboration.

The Big Idea
“Canadian women in sport overcame incredible barriers throughout history to provide a world of opportunities for future generations."
RESEARCH PHASE
Visitor Types
The primary visitors we expect our exhibit to attract are Explorers and Facilitators. We specifically want to cater to families bringing their children—especially young girls to be inspired to join sports.
We also anticipate more mature Explorers and Facilitators, those who might already have some sort of knowledge or at least a strong interest in sports like athletes, coaches, or sports educators and their teams.
Exhibit Sections & Artefacts
The showcases were curated from resources available at this Virtual Museum provided by Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. We chose to display a balanced variety of sports which include Skiing, Golf, Track & Field, Cycling, and stand-alone artefacts and photographs dating from the 1860s to recent years.
The Space & Flow
We chose to use part of the 4th floor of Azrieli Pavilion at Carleton University for our exhibit space. The final vision was to have visitors begin their journey in the common room, head into the studio spaces where they would be carefully guided, and finish in the grand gallery space before exiting back to the common area and gift shop.
Ambiance & Emotional Experience
We then dove into brainstorming the look and feel of our exhibit overall, considering the visitor journey through the different sections and what kinds of messages we wanted to send our audience about women’s sports and their journey. We chose energetic colours and bold, clean typography and graphical elements to engage our primary visitors. We also began considering multi-sensory aspects such as the use of audio and lighting effects, including kinetic interactives that are also educational and mindful of COVID-19 precautions.
