BASSTOOL
Wooden Bar Stool — Inspired by the Thunderbird
Senior Year - 4 Weeks
Personal project to explore and develop woodworking skills.
For the final woodshop project of my high school career, we were prompted to build a stool for use in our home. What came to mind was that I did not have a proper chair to sit on when playing my bass guitar, so I chose to design something specifically for that purpose.
The design of the stool was inspired very closely by my own bass guitar — an Epiphone T-Bird Pro.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
I began with some simple idea sketching, pulling elements from the design of the bass.
I then jumped into Google Sketchup to help me get a better sense of my concept in 3D, after which I created 2D CAD blueprints to start the construction of the stool.
FINAL PRODUCT
The finished stool features pine, cedar, and walnut laminated together to create the seat. The legs are made of walnut with pine detailing and use a skirt to secure them as one unit. The circular cross-brace was achieved by steam-bending thin walnut strips and laminating them together in a jig.
All the separate components were glued and fastened together using screws, visible holes were plugged, and the entire stool was sanded before being finished with a protective wood lacquer.
